The reality of rest and recovery

You've been hitting the gym hard, but you know that rest and recovery are just as important as training. You may be wondering how to optimize your recovery and get the best results. Should you invest in a massage gun? Take cold plunges? Head to the sauna?

In this newsletter, we'll explore the reality of rest and recovery and provide some practical tips for optimizing your recovery routine.

First, let's start with a spoiler alert: there's no recovery technique that can compensate for an unhealthy lifestyle. No sauna session, ice bath, or massage gun can make up for poor nutrition, hydration, and bad habits.

Just like you can't build a house without a solid foundation, you can't rely solely on recovery techniques without ensuring the basics of nutrition, hydration, and rest are taken care of. With that being said, let's focus on what we can control.

So what are the basics of recovery? It's simple, but not necessarily easy. Consistency is key. Here are some essential tips for optimizing your recovery routine:

  • Get QUALITY sleep. Make sure you have a great nighttime routine that helps you to wind down. Also, I would recommend you to invest in a good mattress, pillow, and bedding.
  • Simple but powerful: Never ever skip your protein intake, and make sure you hit your daily intake targets.
  • It's cliché, but learn to listen to your body. Pay attention to how you feel after eating certain foods, doing certain exercises, or engaging in certain activities.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of nutrient-dense whole foods.
  • Again, simple but a must: Stay hydrated. Make drinking plenty of water a daily habit.
  • Don't skip your cardio - it's not killing your gains. Cardio is a must for overall health. Make it fun - play soccer, paddle, or whatever you like.
  • Take complete rest days and use them to recharge and relax! Don't feel guilty for taking time off, and remind yourself that rest is an essential part of progress.
  • Plan time for yourself! Plan enjoyable activities you like and schedule them in your calendar like you would with any other appointment, and stick to them.

While it's easy to get caught up in the latest trends and gadgets, it's important to remember that the fundamentals of recovery are what really matter. I hope these tips will help you optimize your recovery routine and get the most out of your training.

Thank you for reading, and have a restful and joyful day!
